A Lighter Apple Journal Alternative
Apple’s Journal app is free, built in, and better every year: entry suggestions pulled from your photos and workouts, reflection prompts, State of Mind logging, streaks. If you want a full journaling app at no cost, it’s the obvious first stop.
So why look for an alternative? Usually because Journal still asks the big question: an open entry, about anything, whenever you think of it. Plenty of people write two long entries and quietly stop. A blank editor is a blank editor, even a free one.
Your memories come back
Write one line tonight and that’s your journaling for the day. Seven days on it turns up again, and after that it keeps turning up.

Finally fixed the wobbly chair. Took four minutes.
Have it come to you at an hour you pick, or leave notifications off and find them waiting the next time you open the app.
One sentence, and your past comes back
Little Memory narrows the job. You write one sentence about your day — about fifteen seconds — and then the app spends years handing it back to you: what you wrote comes back a week, a month, and a year later. It’s a journal for people who have a hard time keeping a journal, and the coming-back part is the whole reason it exists.
I have particularly enjoyed receiving my two-years-ago reminders, at the time I was going through a life-shaking break up, and its nice to see that I have come a long way.

Little Memory vs. Apple Journal
| Little Memory | Apple Journal | |
|---|---|---|
| A day’s entry | One sentence, photo if you like | Open entries, with suggestions from your photos and activity |
| Time it takes | About fifteen seconds | As much as you give it |
| Old entries | Come back to you after a week, a month, a year | Browse and search your timeline |
| Reminders | A nightly email | Notifications |
| Write by email | Yes — reply to the reminder and the entry is saved | Entries are made in the app |
| Platforms | iPhone | iPhone, iPad, and Mac |
Beyond the table: streaks, most used words, emotion trends over time, search, automated backups, and full export anytime. The little tour has the whole list. Little Memory has been resurfacing memories since 2011, twelve years before Journal shipped.
Who should stay with Apple Journal
If you like longer entries, love the photo-and-workout suggestions, or want your journal on iPad and Mac, Journal is free and it’s good — stay. But if free was never the problem and sticking with it was, what usually helps is a smaller ask — and one line is about as small as an ask gets.
