A Diary App for iPhone

little enough to actually keep

Most diary apps have grown into something bigger than a diary. Prompts to answer, moods to log, goals to track, insights to review. All of it well meant, and all of it more than a diary ever asked of anyone. A diary asks for one thing: that the day gets written down.

Little Memory is a diary app that stays a diary. One line about today, a photo if you have one, and you’re done. It’s been quietly at it since 2011 — over 1,000,000 entries from over 30,000 people, featured by Apple three times.

Your memories come back

Write one line tonight and that’s your journaling for the day. Seven days on it turns up again, and after that it keeps turning up.

Finally fixed the wobbly chair. Took four minutes.

Have it come to you at an hour you pick, or leave notifications off and find them waiting the next time you open the app.

What a day looks like

At the end of the day, write a sentence about it. About fifteen seconds, even on the worst day. Rain finally. Dad called about the fence. Good soup. Nobody is grading the prose — the point isn’t to write well, it’s to have written, so that the day exists somewhere outside your head. If a sentence feels like too much, a photo counts as an entry too.

The part other diary apps skip

A diary you only ever write into is half a diary. The other half is reading it back, and that’s the half Little Memory does for you: each time you open the app, there’s what you wrote a week ago, a month ago, and a year ago, waiting under today’s blank line. Kept long enough, it becomes a little time capsule that pays out on its own — last year’s ordinary Tuesday arriving on exactly the right day.

Daily chronicling makes me more aware of how positive my day was and who, or what, is still on my mind at the end of the day.

Quiet, private, yours

A diary only works if you can be honest in it, so everything is private by default — no feed, no followers, no social login. Search covers every year you’ve written, nightly backups keep it safe, and you can export the whole thing whenever you like. Support comes straight from the developer.

If you’re weighing options, the comparison pages are honest about the other apps. There’s also a page on what makes a little diary different from the thick-book kind, and the little tour shows the whole quiet thing.

What people say

It’s a little therapeutic in that moment. But then it will remind you in 90 days… or a year from then, and it really helps me put into perspective the cycles of my mental state.
Jarvis Johnson, Sad Boyz podcast
I look forward to checking every morning what I got up to last week, month, year. Simple to use and a lovely concept — I only wish I’d discovered it earlier.

This is the first thing I check every morning! Simple but a wonderfully effective drop of joy every day.
