140 years ago - 1885, Statue of Liberty Arrives in New York
An excited crowd of thousands watched as the French ship Isere arrived in New York port with the disassembled pieces of the The Statue of Liberty.
The statue was a gift from the people of France to the American people as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. Designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the robed figure is a representation of the Roman goddess of freedom: Libertas.
