Alice Huyler Ramsey becomes first woman to drive across the United States

These days, driving through the United States takes about a week at most and feels like a rite of passage in America's car culture. It took Alice and her three female companions 59 days to go from Hell's Gate, Manhattan in New York to San Francisco in California. She began her trek on June 9th of 1909. Only 152 of the 3600 miles were paved at the time. They must have shared a lot in their little Maxwell 30. When's your next road trip?
